September Trip to Climb Allen
I intended to do a trail-less climb of Allen and wanted to try to get a sequence of shots from the top of Haystack. This trip ended up being rather challenging and I even ended up hurt. Click on images for a larger view.
This is a view of Colden from across Flowed Land. I set up a base camp near Lake Colden |
The opalescent river was in fine form. |
Dinner time on the rocks. |
I got a very early start the next day, here is the mist over the outlet to Flowed Land with the rising sun on the Algonquin range. |
I followed the river looking for Hanging Spears falls and found myself dropping between house size boulders. Eventually I found the falls, but not until I had spent more than an hour trying to get out of this gorgeous gorge. |
I was trying to follow the trail-less route up Allen in the guide book. However, I got started wrong and ended up between Cliff and Redfield. I was shirtless because of the heat and got my arms, legs, chest and back very scrapped up among the hemlock brush. Finally I made it and the sky was spectacular. |
The next day I spent a long time on Haystack waiting for the clouds to clear. Finally gave up and climbed Table Top. During the climb I fell, landing with my full weight on a 2" diameter broken off tree, striking my voice box, which remains contorted to this day. |
I returned to camp near Colden, spent the night and spent some time at this nice spot on the way out. |
I shaved before my return to civilization. My visit to the emergency room about my voice box was slightly amusing because the doctor looked inside my shorts ("hey doctor, I hurt my throat"). This was presumably to check for abuse since I was so scraped up from the trail-less climbs. |
